Choosing

How to choose a WhatsApp app for Shopify

Most comparison pages are written by the vendor that wins them. This one gives you the criteria, what good looks like on each, and where this product falls short.

Six questions that actually decide it

Ask these of any vendor, including us. The answers separate products that work from products that demo well.

1. Does it read live store data, or run a script?

Why it matters. A scripted bot confirms an item is in stock when it sold out yesterday, and the customer finds out at checkout.

How we answer. The agent reads live products, variants, inventory, orders and customers through the Shopify API while it replies.

2. Can a person take over mid-conversation?

Why it matters. An AI that cannot be interrupted eventually says something a merchant has to apologise for.

How we answer. One click per conversation. The agent stops replying and stays out of the way.

3. Can you see why it answered that way?

Why it matters. Without a trace you cannot correct a wrong answer; you can only hope it does not recur.

How we answer. Every run is a node-by-node timeline showing which tools were called and what returned.

4. Language coverage

Why it matters. Markets where WhatsApp dominates are frequently not English-first.

How we answer. Nine languages in the admin and storefront widgets, with a multilingual catalogue index.

5. What does it cost once it is working?

Why it matters. Message and execution limits decide whether the plan still fits in your busiest month.

How we answer. Published limits per tier — 100 / 2,500 / 10,000 messages a month — with the numbers stated plainly.

6. Does the vendor state what the product does not do?

Why it matters. A vendor that only lists strengths has not told you where you will hit a wall.

How we answer. This site lists the limitations in full, including the ones that cost us sales.

Where this product loses

If any of these are requirements rather than nice-to-haves, another product is a better choice. We would rather you find that out here than three weeks after installing.

  • No bulk or broadcast campaignsThere is no campaign feature. You can create and manage WhatsApp message templates against Meta from inside the app, and the agent replies to customers who message you.
  • No visual workflow builderAutomations run on an event-driven engine, but there is no drag-and-drop editor for authoring them in the app.
  • Commerce-event triggers are not selectable yetThe engine supports orders, checkouts, customers, products and fulfilments. Merchants can currently switch on the inbound WhatsApp message trigger only. The rest are rolling out.
  • No helpdesk, CRM or ERP integrationsConversations live in the app's own inbox. There is no Zendesk, Gorgias or Intercom integration.
  • No SOC 2 attestation, and no GDPR-grade deletion guaranteeThere is no SOC 2 audit, and the data-deletion webhooks are incomplete. Do not treat this as a compliance artefact for a procurement review.

Choosing questions

What is the single most important question to ask?

Whether the app reads your live store data or runs a script. A scripted bot cannot see your inventory, so it confirms items that sold out yesterday and your customer discovers it at checkout.

How do I test a WhatsApp app before committing?

Ask for a conversation trace — the record of what the AI looked up before it answered. A vendor that cannot show you one cannot show you why an answer went wrong.

Should I choose on price?

Choose on the ceilings, not the headline price. Message and execution limits decide whether the plan still fits in your busiest month, and a cheap plan that fails in December is expensive.

Does this product win on every criterion?

No. It has no campaigns, no visual workflow builder and no commerce-event triggers yet, and it does not integrate with a helpdesk. If any of those are essential, choose differently — and this page tells you so rather than burying it.

The full specification, including every limitation, is on the FAQ, and the integration page covers what connects to what. For a procurement review, see data and security.
